137 Days Without Answers: The Family of Kyron Lopes Still Waits for the Truth
This past Sunday, while families across the country celebrated Mother’s Day together, Annette Lopes spent another holiday without her son, Kyron.
It has now been 137 days since Kyron Lopes died after being transported from the Rhode Island Capitol Police Training Academy to Rhode Island Hospital. Kyron was training to become a Capitol Police Officer when, according to his family, they were initially told he suffered a “panic attack.”
But the details shared later paint a far more troubling picture.
According to Kyron’s family, doctors informed them that Kyron had bleeding on the brain, organ failure, and severe swelling in one of his legs. Those medical findings have raised serious questions about what truly happened inside the academy that day and whether the public has been given the full story.
More than four months later, there is still no finalized medical examiner’s report.
There has also been no independent investigation announced. Instead, the Rhode Island State Police continue to handle the investigation into the death of a recruit who was training under the authority of another state law enforcement agency. For many observers, that raises concerns about transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the outcome of the case.
Kyron Lopes’ family deserves answers.
They deserve a clear timeline of events. They deserve transparency regarding what occurred at the training academy. And they deserve an investigation the public can trust without question.
Cases involving deaths connected to law enforcement training academies demand independent oversight and full transparency. Public trust is not built through silence or delay. It is built through openness, accountability, and a willingness to answer difficult questions.
As the days continue to pass, the lack of public information only deepens the frustration and heartbreak surrounding this case.
I am calling on Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee to ensure that Kyron Lopes’ family receives the answers they have waited 137 days for and to support an independent and transparent investigation into his death.
No family should be left searching for the truth this long.
