After months of pushing for answers, the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety has finally acknowledged my public records request regarding Kyron Lopes. But let’s be clear: this response is not transparency.

Rhode Island officials have now announced that no criminal charges will be filed in the death of Rhode Island Capitol Police recruit Kyron Derek Lopes, and that alone should outrage every person who cares about transparency and accountability. NBC 10 reported that the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office and Rhode Island State Police said the investigation is closed, with no charges being brought.

It has now been 137 days since Kyron Lopes died after being transported from the Rhode Island Capitol Police Training Academy to Rhode Island Hospital. Kyron was training to become a Capitol Police recruit when, according to his family, they were initially told he suffered a “panic attack.”
